With the ball, Hugo Mayne (C3 U6) bowled extremely well early on, and Jack Cleverly (SU U6) took the most wickets (8) at an average of 21. Will Pembroke (C3 L6) and Will Hammersley (PR L6) both scored half centuries and there were other promising knocks from Arthur Hardwick (TU U6) 44 and 37, Freddie Kottler (C2 L6) 39 and Christian Freeman (SU U6) 38. They were soundly beaten by the number one ranked school in South Africa, SACS, and there were below par performances against Durbanville CC, as the team proved вЂundercookedвЂ™ in the opening match, and at Rondesbosch with some illness in the camp. There was an impressive victory against Boland U17 in the final match at the beautiful Groot Drakenstein ground and a high-quality performance against a particularly strong Bishops College side under floodlights. The highlight was undoubtably the dramatic two-wicket win against Wynberg Boys High School on the Jacques Kallis Oval with Hugh Norman (SU U6) and Ned Corfield (C2 U6) seeing the team over the line with a ball to spare. The boys played a gruelling six matches in as many days. Nevertheless, both squads fronted up with character, and hopefully the experience will prove very beneficial and the value will be evident when the domestic season comes around. This represented a challenge on a very different scale from the standard school fixture list, where the Girls XI have only lost one match in four seasons since the inaugural fixture in 2016. With girls cricket almost completely absent from the South African school system, all the girls matches were against representative teams featuring players in the Western Cape Regional Performance system drawn from the club game. The Boys played against the very best of the Cape Town schools including the alma maters of Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Alan Lamb, Gary Kirsten and Jonathan Trott. Both squads encountered some extremely tough and ruthlessly competitive opposition at the height of the domestic season and the standard was high. The tour was a wonderful opportunity to play cricket in the stunningly beautiful Cape Town region with its spectacular landscapes. After plenty of training, preparation, team meetings and extensive t-shirt sales, the squad of 28 players (15 boys & 13 girls) and five staff left for Cape Town on Friday 14 th February for eight days which would see an intensive spell of 11 fixtures (6 boys & 5 girls), as well as opportunities to enjoy the South African weather and learn about the culture.
